13th Hussars

Carte-de-Visite, studio J.Batemann in Canterbury
Lieutenant Constable, c. 1878

Robert Constable was born on July 14th, 1853, the son of Reverend H.Constable, Desertmore Glebe, Ovens, County Cork.

He was educated at Marlborough College, that he entered in February 1867, and left by Midsummer 1870.

He was gazetted Cornet in the 7th Dragoon Guards on October 26th, 1871.
His rank was soon abolished and replaced by that of Sub-Lieutenant.

He was promoted Lieutenant on October 28th, 1872.

He exchanged into the 13th Hussars vice A.C.S.Abdy on September 21st, 1874.
The 13th Hussars were at Lucknow by then.

I haven't found the particulars of his Indian stationning, but Robert had definitely made his way back to England by 1878, when he was photographed at the Cavalry Depot, Canterbury - and when he married Isabel Harriet Hayter, on December 30th.
They were married by the Reverend Hayter-George Hayter-Hames at St.Peter's, Eaton Square, London.

Lieutenant Constable then rejoined his regiment in India.
He died at Naini Tal (a North Indian hill-station) on April 6th, 1879.
