Cabinet Card

Private J. Brown c. 1905

J. Brown is wearing the Queen's South Africa medal with three clasps and the King's South Africa medal with two clasps. The QSA medal roll indicates three privates named "J. Brown" ; their regimental numbers are 3342, 3452 and 4656.

Privates 3342 and 3452 were awarded the same four clasps : Paardeberg, Dreifontein, Relief of Kimberley and Transvaal. Private 4656 was awarded the clasps Orange Free State, Transvaal 1901 and 1902.

He is wearing on the collar the regimental badge that was introduced c. 1905.

The photograph is delicately tinted - but the artist got it wrong with respect to the collar as 10th Hussars' one was of the same dark blue as the tunic. The red collar was distinctive to the 3rd Hussars.
